Champions off to flying start as new season tees off

Defending champions Longniddry started their Winter League campaign with a new look side, but picked up right where they left off last year.  Only five members of the team that dealt out a 5-0 thrashing when Gullane came to visit last season lined up on Sunday, but the new boys proved they’re up for the title defence by serving up the same result against Jeff Aitken’s hapless team.

Newly promoted North Berwick got their season off to the perfect start with a first win for more than 30 years in this competition against local rivals Tantallon, the deciding point coming when Horry Lawson and Craig Hardie rallied to win the 16th and 17th to beat the more favoured Shaun Gordon and Fraser Symon, after earlier seeing a commanding lead disappear when they lost three straight holes from the 12th. Tail gunners Chris Brown and Richard Johnston escaped with a half point when the latter holed from six feet for a winning birdie on the 18th green.

In the 2nd Division Glen started their campaign in fine style, handing out a whitewash to visiting Castle Park.  Meanwhile Haddington signalled their intent with a win in their tricky opening tie away at Craigielaw.

Kilspindie came out on top in a close encounter away to Thorntree, whilst Whitekirk proved just too strong on home turf against visitors Musselburgh Old.
