Tantallon survive, Longniddry promoted, but the relegation battle continues

In a stunning climax to this year's league season Tantallon completed their escape from relegation.  The five times league champions had occupied one of the bottom two spaces ever since their opening defeat to Haddington on 1st October.  And with just 4 points from their opening 8 fixtures their prospects of survival at the turn of the year looked remote.

But they turned their season around with four wins to finish their league programme, the final one coming on Sunday at Musselburgh - the same venue where they secured the crucial point to guarantee promotion to the top flight twelve months ago.

That meant a four way tie for 3rd place in the league table.  Tantallon and Musselburgh knew their points difference was enough to keep them out of the drop zone, but Craigielaw had to do better than a 4-1 defeat at home to champions Gullane to move ahead of North Berwick.

In the event thaey couldn't do that, and their 4-1 defeat meant they couldn't be separated from North Berwick on league points, points difference, or the head-to-head record with North Berwick (each team recorded a 3-2 win against the other).  The two teams will now go head-to-head next Sunday at Gullane in a relegation play-off.

In Division 2 Glen upset the odds by winning at Castle Park in their bid to claim second place and promotion.  But with the news that Longniddry had won at Gifford, John McMorland's team came up short on points difference for a second successive season.
