Craigielaw return to winning ways

Craigielaw came out on top in an exciting derby match with Kilspindie, after an inauspicious start to the season had seen them languishing at the foot of Division 2.

In a match that seemed to swing one way then the other, it was Craigielaw that seemed to have the advantage early on, with big half way leads quickly converted into comfortable wins for the home team in matches 1 and 5.  But by that time Graeme White and Gary Porteous had established a 4 hole half way lead for the visitors against Marcus Cullen and Andrew Mowley, and Kilspindie seemed to be taking the initiative in the two remaining matches as well.

And as the back nine unfolded youngster Rob Paterson hit some remarkable shots enabling him and Duncan Hamilton to win 3/2, shortly before the experience of Bourhill & Naples proved enough for the visitors to prevail on the same green and level the score.

But Cullen & Mowley, the latest young talent to come off the Craigielaw production line, weren’t ready to give up the fight.  They steadily picked away at their deficit, eventually covering the difficult inward nine in one under par to turn their match around and steal the decisive win for their team on the 18th green.

By contrast Haddington were untroubled by the visit of Castle Park, the home team running out comfortable 5-0 winners.  Neil Bain’s team move into third, and may be looking to jump into the promotion places when they entertain Whitekirk in a fortnight.

But before then there’s more derby action on Sunday when Thorntree visit Musselburgh Old, whilst Whitekirk travel to Gifford in search of the win that would take them back to the top.
