Three of a kind beats an Ace

There was high drama at Kilspindie on Sunday when Glen, no strangers to exciting finishes this season, were the visitors.  And it was clear from the outset that this week’s match would be no different, as skipper Innes Christie got his team off to the perfect start when he aced the short opening hole.

And as the match unfolded it became clear his tie was going to be pivotal with the other four eventually finishing two apiece.  So when the visiting captain and partner James Pennycuik approached the sixteenth green with a 2 hole lead, their watching teammates might be forgiven for thinking they were about to put the seal on a valuable away victory and consolidate their position on top of the table.  But opponents Ross Colquhoun and Derek Naples had other ideas, and their finishing salvo of three birdies was enough to snatch an unlikely win and leave their guests with nothing to show for their efforts.

Incredibly this was the third time in as many starts that a match involving the Glen has been decided by a birdie on the last hole of the deciding tie, and although Christie’s ace was marked by both teams with a traditional post-match dram, it seemed the Kilspindie side had more to celebrate than the hole-in-one.

The result puts Kilspindie on top of the table, at least for the time being, but with just two points separating them from sixth placed Gifford there’s all to play for.  And five of the top six face away matches in the next round, so there could be more twists and turns in what promises to be a hotly contested promotion race.
