Gullane, North Berwick through to Cup Final

Posted by Torquil McInroy on Mar 02 2019 at 04:00PM PST in 2019-20

Gullane and North Berwick both won away from home on Sunday to move through to this year's Cup Final.

There was a close tussle at the top of the order at Kilspindie, but when Simmonds and Houlston took their point on the final green, it left the visitors with a clear cut advantage. Gullane led in three other ties, and went on to secure a reasonable comfortable victory whilst Paterson and Jerome claimed a point for the hosts.

Over the fence at Craigielaw the home team took the top tie quite comfortably, whilst North Berwick were too strong in ties 3 and 4.  But the remaining games were close, with Watt & Glenn all square through 18 with Wood & Gray, whilst McInroy & Cochrane won the 16th for the visitors to level their match.

Up front Craigielaw holed bravely for a half in 3 at the 1st extra hole, whilst their teammates also halved the 17th.  Then, just before Watt & Glenn could putt for a winning birdie on the 2nd, news filtered through that McInroy & Cochrane had won their 18th hole, their tie and the match.

So that sets up a repeat of the 2017 Cup Final when Gullane prevailed 3-2 at Kilspindie.  This time round the teams will meet at Royal Musselburgh.

But before then both teams have their eye on some other silverware.  North Berwick play at Gifford next Sunday needing to avoid defeat to be 2nd Division champs, whilst Gullane travel to Tantallon in search of a sixth consecutive 1st Division title.
