Tantallon win Stroke Play title at Haddington

Tantallon won the Winter League Stroke Play tournament for the first time in twenty years at Haddington on Saturday, and in so doing denied Gullane a second consecutive clean sweep of the Winter League silverware.

With two scores returned each, the two clubs were locked together at the top of the leaderboard and it all came down to the final group of the day. And that group featured Gullane's experienced Duncan Low and Barry Templeton who were one shot clear of their playing partners with five holes left to play.  But it was Tantallon's youngsters that finished stronger. Euan Bowden and Liam Brown turned the tables over the closing holes to card a 76 against a 79 by their rivals.

For one teammate at least the result brought back fond memories of Tantallon's last success in this tournament. Eddie Danks was also in the team when Tantallon lifted the title in 1995, their third stroke play victory in four years, and in the middle of a decade in which Tantallon and Royal Musselburgh dominated the league between them.

The current Tantallon squad can't yet boast a record to match that of their 1990's counterparts, but with the 2nd Division title, and promotion to the top flight, already secured they at least have the opportunity to chase the top prize next season.
