East Lothian Winter Cup preview

Posted by Torquil McInroy on Jan 07 2017 at 04:00PM PST in 2019-20

With the 1st and 2nd Division title races hotting up, attention swings to the Cup which gets underway this Sunday. Defending champions Gullane have a bye in the first round, as do Musselburgh Old and Kilspindie, but there are sure to be some close matches to look forward to.

Longniddry and Royal Musselburgh couldn't be separated in the league at the weekend, and they return to the same venue just seven days later to face each other again in the Cup.

Likewise, Glen welcome Tantallon for their 1st round match in a repeat of their pre-Christmas encounter which finished in a 2½-2½ draw.

Gifford were first out of the hat when the draw was made last September, so they could enjoy home advantage all the way through if they can get on a Cup run.  First up is Thorntree who they defeated narrowly in the league back in November

North Berwick have a score to settle when they go to Haddington.  There were several twists and turns in their league encounter at the same venue back in November, but the final one went in the hosts' favour as Haddington snatched a last green victory.

Musselburgh entertain Craigielaw looking to avenge the 5-0 thrashing they received in the league just before Christmas. They did record a league win at home to Craigielaw back in October, but since that match Gordon Smith's team have reeled off seven straight league wins and will be hard to stop.

The action tees off 9.30 Sunday morning at the Glen.
