Musselburgh to face North Berwick in Cup Final

Posted by Torquil McInroy on Mar 08 2013 at 04:00PM PST in 2019-20

Musselburgh recorded an impressive win at Kilspindie in today’s Cup semi final to set up a final showdown with league champions North Berwick.

And despite the unusual Saturday fixture – the result of disruption due to snow earlier in the competition – both clubs managed to assemble strong teams.

It’s fair to say there was a mood of optimism in this contest despite the cold March weather, with the visitors buoyed by their successful finish to their league campaign and the hosts able to turn their attentions fully to the Cup having already secured the 2nd Division title.

However is was visitors Calum Burgess and Ken Davidson, then Benn McLeod and Lewis Bain that produced some fine golf to take the first two ties comfortably, before Ross Colquhoun and Derek Naples clawed one back for Kilspindie in match 4.

But the remaining two ties were close, and as the home team knew only too well from their earlier exploits in this competition, the format guarantees a chance for the trailing team so long as the match is alive.

And another Kilspindie cliffhanger looked likely as home duo Grant Robertson and Euan Knox took their match against Brian Henderson and Tom Cordery into extra holes, with tail gunners Graeme White and Martin Hay still in contention in the closing holes.

The home team were looking to repeat the escape act they pulled off here against Haddington back in January, but it wasn’t to be as Ian Fyfe and Craig Dewar sealed the deal for the visitors when they eventually defeated White and Hay on the home green.

So Musselburgh move on to tomorrow’s final, where they face North Berwick.  Alex Chisholm’s side have yet to record a league win against the newly crowned league champions, all three of their previous meetings (two of them this season) ending in a 3-2 scoreline in favour of North Berwick.

But a closer analysis suggests the final may be too close to call.  In both of this season’s encounters Chisholm’s side have suffered misfortune on the last hole of the deciding tie, and have walked away empty handed when a share of the spoils seemed the more likely outcome.

Tomorrow’s final offers a chance to settle the score, but North Berwick, fresh from their first ever league title, will be keen to finish their season undefeated and complete the double.

The Cup Final tees off at 10am tomorrow at Gullane No 1.
