Tantallon move top as promotion race enters final furlong

Posted by Torquil McInroy on Jan 31 2015 at 04:00PM PST in 2019-20

On the weekend that saw the sad demise of Castle Park golf club it was Tantallon that proved they were a class above their opposition when they delivered the most emphatic of victories.  Fraser Symon’s men looked like first division material, needing just 69 holes to see off Whitekirk.  Their 5-0 win was enough to see them move a point clear at the top with just one round of matches remaining.

But in this year’s keenly contested second division nothing is yet quite resolved.

Tantallon can claim the title if they avoid defeat at Thorntree next week, but in the event that they lose it’s still possible that two teams could move past them and they would miss out on promotion.

Haddington too have their future in their own hands, but they face a difficult assignment when they complete their league schedule away to Craigielaw – the only side with a 100% home record this term.  A win next Sunday guarantees Haddington promotion, but as they’re currently just a point ahead of their rivals, defeat will see them tumble out of the promotion places.

But Longniddry aren’t done yet.  If they successfully repel the visit of Whitekirk next week, and Haddington fail to win at Craigielaw, it will be Paul Gibson’s outfit that make the step up to the top flight.

Craigielaw are left rueing last week’s draw at Gifford.  One more point from that outing could have proved crucial, but Gordon Smith’s men now need to beat Haddington and hope Longniddry slip up.

Castle Park’s closure means that Gifford and Kilspindie, the teams that were due to play them today and next Sunday, are awarded 5-0 wins. These two clubs now share 5th place in the table, but are just too far adrift to threaten the promotion spots.

All will be decided when the 2nd Division concludes next week.
