Gullane win Winter Cup again

Gullane defeated North Berwick in the Cup Final at Royal Musselburgh to claim the League and Cup double for a sixth successive season.

The scoreline was 5-0 in the end, although an hour or so earlier the match was very much in the balance with three ties all square and each team leading by a single hole in one tie.  Then Saunders & Houlston went one ahead at the top of the order with a par on the seventeenth, and secured their point with another par on the final hole after Justen Ross’s 8 foot birdie putt slipped by.

Gullane led by a single hole in tie 2 until Roberts & Walker made an unbelievable 4 from deep in the woods left of the difficult fifteenth, moving 2 up when their tie seemed set to go back to all square.  They finished the job on the next hole.

Ties 3 and 5 boarded the seventeenth tee all square, whilst Clelland and Thomson made 3 on the sixteenth to move 1 up.  Then they won the next hole claim victory giving team skipper John Clelland and his partner the unique distinction of delivering the point that won the Cup just one week after claiming the half point that secured the League title.

With the match result decided in their favour, Gullane went on to take both the remaining ties on the final green to complete the whitewash.

So that completes another successful season for the champions, and a fourth Cup Final defeat for North Berwick who nevertheless return to the top flight on the back of a campaign that included thirteen wins and the 2nd Division title.
