Musselburgh let chance get away at Craigielaw

Posted by Torquil McInroy on Feb 16 2019 at 04:00PM PST in 2019-20

Musselburgh missed out narrowly on an opportunity to win at Craigielaw and reach safety in the 1st division relegation battle.  In a closely contested encounter the two team captains went to the final green in the deciding tie, but in the end it was the home team that prevailed.

Meanwhile in the 2nd Division Musselburgh Old were untroubled by the visit of Gifford and moved off the bottom of the table with a solid win.

So that sets up some interesting encounters next Sunday as we move into the league season end-game.  In the race for the 2nd Div title Winterfield travel to North Berwick in search of the win they almost certainly need to remain in the promotion places, whilst North Berwick can put themselves straight back in the top flight should they win.  Kilspindie are the other factor in the equation, and they can guarantee a return to the promotion places with a win at Thorntree.

Glen travel to Haddington needing a win to keep their hopes of 4th place alive.

In the top flight Gullane host Craigielaw knowing a win could secure the title, should Tantallon fail to take the points at Musselburgh.  And with Musselburgh not yet sure of their place in the 1st Division next season that will be no easy task for the title challengers.  However Monktonhall has been a happy hunting ground for Fraser Symon’s team in recent seasons – a halved match there on the last day of the season two years ago secured promotion at Glen’s expense, whilst a 3-2 win to close off last season was just enough to ensure their top flight survival.  This time round there’s more at stake.  A big win at home last week brought the five times champions within striking distance of the leaders, and victory this Sunday could set up a title decider a fortnight later at North Berwick’s West Links.

Meanwhile Longniddry round off what has been a tough season at home to Royal Musselburgh.  Mike Bacigalupo’s team have yet to record a win this term, but that has to change on Sunday if they are to stand a chance of survival.  A home win could leave Musselburgh in the drop zone, should they lose out to Tantallon.
