Miller rescues Dunbar but Glen return to the top

There’s something about matches involving the Glen this season and rookies stealing the limelight !  Although this week the Glen players could only stand and watch as Dunbar’s David Miller stepped up when his side needed him most.

Sunday’s only Winter League match provided an enthralling game as Innes Christie’s team made the journey east. And with the exception of the final pairing, where the Glen skipper teamed up with James Pennycuik for a comfortable win, every tie went to the 18th green.  At the top of the order, Jimmy Jack and Gary Reid came from behind to beat Tam Caldwell and John Archibald.  Then match 2 finished all square, before Andrew Boddie and Lewis Fenn secured a 1 hole victory to keep Dunbar’s interest alive.  So it all came down to match 4 to decide where the points would go.  With the score all square after 17 and the visitors a point to the good overall, it looked as though Glen might continue their fine 100% start to the season.  But Stevie Nicol and his rookie partner Miller weren’t about to give up the fight.  After both drives split the fairway, it was Nicol who struck the decisive blow for the hosts with a superb 5 iron to 12 feet.  Miller then celebrated his Winter League debut by calmly rolling in the putt for a rare birdie on the tough 18th and a share of the points.

So Glen find themselves a point clear at the top in Division 2.  But challengers Kilspindie will have a chance to move ahead next week when they travel to Craigielaw.
